Navigating the Cultural Biases Against Asian American Women

A couple of months ago I posted a photo of me and my Chinese grandmother (now passed) talking about her challenges with mental health for mental health awareness month.

Unfortunately, in the Asian American community, discussing things like this openly is almost considered a sin (at least in my family).

My Caucasian mom (previously a hippie) has been praising me for my posts, and how “open” and “transparent” I’ve been to post about mental health & helping the community.

How could two upbringings — Asian vs. American– think so differently?

It turns out that these huge differences are sometimes what keep many AAPI women from wanting to stand out and speak up in a culture where individualism is highly rewarded.

Thus, I’ve decided to partner with podcast host, Judy Tsuei, to discuss the cultural biases within our community, that can hold us back.
